2016 Mitsubishi Concept XR-PHEV II crossover SUV

2016 Mitsubishi Concept XR-PHEV II crossover SUV

The long awaited follow up of XR-PHEV I study unveiled at Tokyo Car Show in 2013, 2016 Mitsubishi Concept XR-PHEV II concept has been presented at 2015 Geneva Motor Show. This futuristically styled crossover SUV represents a new plug-in hybrid from Mitsubishi. Most experts believe that 2016 Mitsubishi Concept XR-PHEV II is in fact how the new Outlander Sport will look like, or at least many features, including the powertrain, will be present in it.

2016 Mitsubishi Concept XR-PHEV II specs

The 2016 Mitsubishi Concept XR-PHEV II is powered by both gasoline and electric engine. The details on both are still sketchy. Mitsubishi stated that it will be possible to drive XR-PHEV II in three modes, gasoline engine only, electricity only and a hybrid drive, where main power would be supplied by electric motor and gasoline engine would kick in for additional power when needed. Electricity for the electric motor will be supplied by a 12-kilowatt-hour lithium-ion battery pack, allowing it to deliver 163 horse powers. Again, there are no details on how much distance XR-PHEV II can cover with a fully charged battery. Previous XR-PHEV I study featured 1.1 liter gasoline engine, but it is uncertain if Mitsubishi retained it in the XR-PHEV II. Unlike many other crossovers, XR-PHEV II has a front wheel drive. The company states that in mixed drive XR-PHEV II will emit less than 40 grams of CO2 per kilometer.

2016 Mitsubishi Concept XR-PHEV II design

Exterior

Not much has changed on the exterior, compared to XR-PHEV I from 2013. Redesigned front grill, new A pillars, new lower bumpers and added chrome on the rear fascia sums it up. The front end retained its rather aggressive look. Basically, Mitsubishi toned down on futuristic elements in preparation for the production model. With the length of 4,490 mm, the 2016 Mitsubishi Concept XR-PHEV II is in between of current Outlander Sport with 4,295mm and proper Outlander with 4,655mm.

Interior

Same as the exterior, interior now looks much more ready for serial production. The futuristically looking middle console has been replaced with a large touch screen with central knob for selecting functions. The steering wheel is now three-spoke, with a flat bottom. It will be interesting to see if Mitsubishi will retain this sporting detail for a serial car.

2016 Mitsubishi Concept XR-PHEV II price

Since it is a concept model, no details of the price or release date have been published. The start of the production isn’t expected before 2016. Due to its hybrid drive, the 2016 Mitsubishi Concept XR-PHEV II will certainly be more costly that current Outlander S.
